PAWS June – Golden Amritsar and an auction

paws-june201236 members and 3 visitors attended our June meeting on the 26th, when Mrs Paula Short came along and told us all about “Golden Temple – Amritsar India”. Paula has developed a passion for India and its temples, culture and history since her first visit in 2000 and was able to give us quite an insight  into it. She had a fantastic array of slides which she used to highlight her very interesting talk.

We also had our silent auction of New and Nearly New items which raised just over £35 for our funds.

Our next get together is on July 24th which will be our July themed social and this year it is a “Greek Night”. We have a professional Duo coming along to entertain us with music  and a dancing demonstration and we will be having a light  Meze supper and suitable refreshments .The cost is £7.00 for visitors. Numbers are limited so please book by contacting one of the committee members listed below.

PAWS – May, Confessions of a mass caterer

paws-jane-malyon-may12At our May meeting on the 22nd, we welcomed back Jane Malyon to tell us about “Confessions of a Mass Caterer”.  Jane and her husband have been running Country Cuisine for some 34 years catering for various events from Wedding Receptions to Birthday celebrations.  She relayed a number of amusing stories about the types of people she has catered for from Mr. X, an East-Ender with Mafia connections, who had 200 guests to his Ruby Wedding party together with security and dogs (in case anything got nicked) to a very rowdy (food throwing) party at a Medic’s Annual Ball at a London teaching hospital.  From drunks, uninvited guests, tearful brides to broken items, Jane has dealt with them all.

Our next meeting is on June 26th when Ms. P. Short will tell us all about “Golden Temple Amitsar, India” and we will be having a silent auction of New and Nearly New items.

Details of all our meetings and speakers can be found on the diary on the home page of the Winstred 100 website.

Membership is currently full, but visitors are very welcome at a cost of £3.50.

Quires in our Villages – Peldon History Lecture

peldon-history-quiresWith vocal support from members of Quire (The Colchester World Music Community Choir), Bill Tamblyn celebrates the work of local music historian, Chris Turner, revealing the wealth of music sung in West Galleries in our area from the 18th century onwards.

Come and join in a rumbustious song or two on Wednesday 16th May at 7:30pm in St Mary’s Church, Peldon! Tickets £8

Tel: Bill Tamblyn 01206 735770

This is NOT about Anglican choirs as we know them today. But interestingly enough, the story does reflect the antagonism between choir and clergy that goes way, way back into our folk history. Nothing new here!

Professor Bill Tamblyn begins with the mystery: What ever happened to the West Gallery at Peldon? All the evidence was cleared away when it was pulled down in the mid 19th century.. or was it?

Was there a West Gallery Quire of rustics who sang loudly from the gallery and ‘led’ the singing? If so, what did they sing? Can we sing it too?

Building on scraps of information from Peldon, and records from other parishes round the country, Bill creates a musical picture of a lively, rumbustious and irascible bunch who created a whole new form of music-making that was to liven up services and, as is still true to day in the North of England, liven up pub singing at Christmas.

Bill brings with him members of Quire – The Colchester World Music Community Choir to help us enter in to the spirit of the times. You will go out with a lively spring in your step and a song in your heart such that you will ask “why cant we sing like that in church these days?

                    Barry Kaufmann-Wright
At our April meeting on the 24th, we welcomed back Barry Kaufmann-Wright to tell us all about working with Gerald Durrell.  Barry has been a naturalist all his life and had the good fortune to work with Mr. Durrell at Jersey Zoo during 1964-1971.  He told us all about the breeding programmes that he had been involved with at the Zoo together with showing us a selection of some of his 64,000 slides.  We are losing 10,000 species a year due to extinction.  He also relayed some stories about being bitten on the head by a lemur and having to have 75 stitches only for these to be unpicked in a “grooming session” by one of his favourite chimps.  Mr. Durrell died in 1998 but his legacy lives on.

Our next meeting is on 22nd May when Jane Malyon returns with “Confessions of a Mass Caterer”.  Details of all our meetings and speakers can be found on the diary on the home page of the Winstred 100 website.

                    WINSTRED HUNDRED PARISH COUNCIL

Peldon   Great Wigborough   Little Wigborough   Salcott   Virley

Draft minutes of the meeting of Winstred Hundred Parish Council held at Peldon Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 10th April 2012.

Present: Jane Banks, John Walker, Nicky Ellis, Phil Gladwin, Lynne Simmons, Netty Knill Jones and 3 members of the public

Apologies for absence: Kevin Bentley, Andrew Ellis, Charles Dymond, Jinny Gale

Minutes of the last meeting were agreed by all and signed by the vice chairman with the alteration at 6. Broadband update to say ‘It was agreed by all to give Phil a mandate to vote for this at the meeting and John Walker to represent us’ in our bid……..

Borough Councillors: Simon High, from CBC Street and Leisure Services, is making good progress with organizing ditch clearance in Great Wigborough and hopefully will pursue residents in Salcott for similar work to be carried out in order to assist with potential flooding issues.

                    Public-Have Your Say: None

                    Declarations of Interest: None

                    1. Police – no reports of crimes to our knowledge.

                    2. Gold Edition Magazine – cost will be the same as last year, John will organize the cover as before and as usual it will be delivered to all the houses in our five villages by various willing volunteers. This edition will include the Chairman’s and the year’s financial reports.

                    3. Playgrounds and fields – any outstanding work in the playgrounds will be carried out shortly.  Volunteers will be asked to assist in collecting the old bark from Salcott play area and take to Peldon. Following that the rubber clipping can be arranged for Salcott.  Volunteers will also be sort to help clear the ditch on Moss Hay, overgrown shrubbery will be cut back in the autumn and the basket ball area assessed for safety, repairs and obtaining a grant. There has been dog fouling again on Moss Hay.  This is dangerous to children’s health and very unpleasant for all so please pick up your dog’s mess.  We will report to the dog warden any culprits we hear of.

                    4. Website update – progress is being made.

                    5. Abberton Reservoir Expansion, Community Funds & Rights of Way – if all goes to plan the new road will be opened on Saturday. For the time being the old road from Layer Church will be used for access to the Visitor Centre. The water level in the reservoir will take a couple of years to adjust and be established.  Our well presented application for funding has been accepted and funds granted (see Broadband below).  Footpaths have yet to be sorted as that cannot be done until nearing completion of the main works. John offered to be our representative on the Rights of Way Committee when formed.

                    6. Broadband update – we have received confirmation that funding is available from the 106 Reservoir agreement to create hi-speed internet wireless network in the Winstred 100, the network will include Layer Breton.  This will give our villages internet speed equivalent to the UK’s largest cities and access to ‘urban’ style online facilities including TV, films, video links, free phone calls etc. This gift is a unique opportunity, most rural areas in the UK will not ever in the foreseeable future benefit from this kind of facility.

                    7. CBC Emergency Planning Meeting – was attended and their main objective is forming lists of appropriate people to be of use in an emergency.  Our updated plan when finished will be sent to CBC for advice and or approval.

                    8. Flooding matters update – as above in Borough Councillors

                    9. Standing Orders – Phil proposed, Jane seconded and all agreed for the small change in the wording in our Standing Orders be adopted.  This accommodates for a situation where the chair cannot be found for one reason or another from our usual order of rotation of the villages.

                    10. Actions and Reminders List – updated

                    11. Complaint to CBC about the Parish Councillors – It was noted that Mr Bevan has lodged a formal complaint with CBC about all the members of the Parish Council.  The complaint is related to planning issues.  The Parish Council does not believe that there is any substance in the complaint but will, of course, co-operate fully with the relevant authorities who will investigate it.

                    12. Salcott crossroads bus shelter – many thanks were given to Terry Simmons for doing such a splendid job of modifying this bus shelter to make it more weather-proof for users.  We hope to put a photo of the finished result on the website.

PAWS – March St Trinians Experience

At our recent March AGM/St. Trinians evening on the 27th March 44 members came along to select the new President- Sheila Gray. Sheila replaces Gen Fretwell as President and Pam Foakes will be her Vice-President for the forthcoming year.  9 of the existing committee were re-elected with Sue Copeland standing down having served many years on the W.I. committee before forming part of the new committee for P.A.W.S. Both were presented with flowers to thank them for all their hard work.

It was a very enjoyable evening with the majority of the members getting into the spirit of the evening by dressing up in “school attire” and we all tucked into some excellent Fish and Chips. We rounded the evening off with a quiz based on “Who Did What” which were fun questions supplied by the committee for the members to guess who did what.

Our next meeting is on 24th April and we will be having Mr. Kaufmann-Wright back to tell us all about working with Gerald Durrell. Details of all our meetings and speakers can be found on the diary on the home page of the Winstred 100 website.

Membership is currently full, but visitors are very welcome at a cost of £3.50. If you would like any further information about P.A.W.S. please ring any of us on the following numbers. Alice 01206 735510, Jane 01206 735004 or Julia 01206 735053.
