Apologies for absence: Robert Davidson

Minutes of the last meeting were agreed by all and signed by the chairman

Zone Warden Report: Unfortunately, they are now having to carry out many jobs in the town centre but hopefully, with an additional member, will attend our meetings every other month. Nevertheless, they continue to pick up rubbish and prosecute the fly tippers whenever possible and also dog fouling culprits. Posters put up around the countryside are an offence unless permission is sought from the land owner or permission from Colchester Borough Council Enforcement Manager.

County and Borough Councillor Reports: None given

Public-Have Your Say: Were all in attendance for County Broadband information and to report their problems.

Declarations of Interest: None

  1. County Broadband Information – The majority of issues and problems occurring before and during the summer have been dealt with and much has been updated with new high capacity equipment installed. County Broadband is a serious contender for a grant which would be available for fibre installation which will increase upload and download speeds to homes enormously but interest for possible uptake is important for it to be a viable proposition for our villages.
  2. Playgrounds and Playing Fields – are all in good order and the Community Group has carried out work for us on the greens, footpaths and Moss Hay.
  3. Soldier Silhouettes – 3 have been installed in our villages organized by Borough Councillor Robert Davidson and a local tradesman in honour of lives lost in WW1 for which a donation is requested to cover costs, Robert K proposed, Phil seconded, all agreed with one abstainer for the parish council to buy these at a total cost of £180 noting that they can be auctioned off or sold at a later date and money given to the charity.
  4. Peldon Noticeboard – The existing one has rotted at the bottom so a new metal one will be ordered at an approximate cost of £320 plus a minimal cost for materials for/and fitting for which Phil proposed, Jinny seconded and all agreed.
  5. UK Power Networks Project – A new cabinet will be installed and cable work improved and tidied up at Malting Road near the bus shelter.
  6. Peldon and Wigboroughs Community Hall – Borough Councillor Locality Budget is funding staging for the new hall with the help of the parish council being able to reclaim the VAT.
  7. Actions and Reminder List – updated.

Planning Applications:

181981 Proposal: Retrospective application for the change of use of agricultural land to domestic garden land and erection of an outbuilding for gym use including personal training sessions. Amended description at 5 Butchers View, Church Road, Peldon

    The Community Group continue to carry out good work for us with clearance at the church green area, verges along Malting Road and St Ives footpath.

How to do Everything and Be Happy

Peter Jones, looking happy, with Treasurer Jane Anderson

PAWS October – How to do Everything and Be Happy

Instead of hearing about the History of Watermills, PAWS were delighted with their last-minute replacement, a very happy Peter Jones.  Peter stepped in after Ken Guyton unfortunately, had to cancel due to illness.   What a great evening was had, members laughed, cried and laughed so much again!

Early Ambitions

As a young boy, inspired by the antics of James Bond at Gants Hill cinema, Peter had yearned to be an actor.  Discouraged from this by his mother he was encouraged to get a “sensible job”.  He started professional life as a particularly rubbish Continue reading “How to do Everything and Be Happy”

History Everywhere

History Everywhere map

History Everywhere mapHistory Everywhere – 20th October

Do you enjoy walking in the countryside? Did you wonder about particular features that you see around you? Is it Saxon or Roman? Or perhaps why a town looks and feels the way it does?   If so, this one-day course, led by Nicholas James, is definitely for you.

Course Summary

Britain’s history lies in its familiar geographies. Town and country have been shaped by planning and by accidents, agreements and conflicts, policies and technologies, by work and by play, by worship, and, above all, by changing climate and population. We can identify a series of chapters:

  • the long era of prehistory, for which archaeology is the sole evidence;
  • the Roman period, commonly imagined as one of radical change but now seen, by some historians, as a mix of innovation and tradition;
  • the Saxon period, which witnessed both the collapse and the reinvention of state government and towns;
  • the later Middle Ages saw growth followed by a catastrophic decline;
  • the Early Modern period of urban and rural development under new concepts of civilization;
  • the industrial age of massive growth, technological transformation and radical policies.

The principles for studying landscapes and finding the clues are simple but the analysis of causes can be much more complicated.

How to Attend

If you want to find out more about this intriguing subject come to Tollesbury Saturday 10.00 -3.00 pm 20th October. Information about this day course can be found on the WEA website wea.org.uk. Type in “History Everywhere” in the subject or keyword box. You can book online or phone 0300 303 3464. Alternatively, contact Anne Mossman 07973 479636.  The course fee is £18 although discounts & concessions are available depending on your circumstances.

Venue address is Tollesbury Sailing Club. Woodrolfe Rd, CM9 8SE.

PAWS September – The Connie

With the Mediterranean summer behind us and all the beautiful changing colours of autumn around us, we were taken on a lovely trip down memory lane by Mrs Wendy Butcher.  The delightful subject of the evening was “The Connie”, the history of the Constitutional Holiday Camp.

The camp was situated on the East Coast at Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk.  Hopton village had its own railway station which linked it with Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.  It was a lovely little rural village with a Post Office and a few shops.

Starting in 1929

Don’t leave your home in the dark

Don’t leave your home in the dark

Don’t leave your home in the dark

Essex Police are warning residents not to leave their home in the dark.  With the nights drawing in, the tell-tale signs of empty houses become more apparent.  This is a bonus for burglars who prefer to target empty homes unseen and avoid confrontation.

As the days get shorter if you work away from home, or even pop out to get the children from school, by the time you return home it may already be dark.  A house in darkness says no one is in especially if your neighbour’s houses either side have lights on and show other signs of being occupied. If you back onto open farmland or have parking areas or footpaths to side or rear this may be even more apparent.

Illusion of Occupancy

Create the “Illusion of Occupancy”, when its dark make your home look like you are in. Leave lights on or put them on timers or daylight sensors to come when it gets dark. Remember though no one lives in the hall or on the landing so if you leave these lights on supplement these with lights on in rooms that you would normally occupy at that time of day i.e. lounge and kitchen.

A carefully placed imitation TV or “Fake TV” can further add to that illusion of occupancy by making it look like the television is on. Some burglars may also listen at windows or letterboxes for signs of activity, so consider leaving a radio on within your home.

Don’t forget the outside of your property too, if burglars see that it is lit they are less likely to approach for fear of being seen.
Leave lights on, with energy efficient bulbs it costs very little nowadays and yet may save you lots!
