PAWS February – Perrywood Garden Centre

At our last Meeting on 28th February, 39 members plus 5 visitors came along to hear Alan Bourne give us the History of Perrywood Garden Centre.

The Perrywood Garden Centre
Perrywood is an independent, family-owned garden centre and nursery run by Alan, Karin and their children Simon & Hannah in Essex. We work hard to produce and source quality plants and products for your home and garden. Whether you are a plant enthusiast or want a day out with the family we have the products, customer service and facilities you are looking for. Our large covered areas allow you to visit whatever the weather, and you can enjoy a home cooked meal or cream tea in our light, bright modern coffee shop. Our 10 acre site is surrounded by beautiful countryside, backing onto woodland and views over the Kelvedon valley.
Alan Bourne & Members
Named after local wood
Perry Wood is next to the site and lent its name to the business back in the 50’s when Alan Bourne’s parents, Mary and Les, bought the land and called it Perrywood Nurseries. They started out growing potatoes and pick-your-own strawberries.
After working for Colchester parks department, and seeing the supermarkets begin to take over the strawberry market, son Alan Bourne started to grow plants to sell from the front of the property and took over the business with his wife Karin in 1984.
Over the next 30 years they gradually grew the site into an award-winning garden centre. It now attracts customers from all over Essex and further afield. Two of Alan and Karin’s children – Simon and Hannah – now help run the business.

A truly interesting and informative evening and we hope to follow this up with a visit and tea.

Our next get together is on 28th March and is our AGM and therefore a closed meeting. Members will also be treated to a Fashion Show with the opportunity to browse and purchase should they so wish.

The Frame is there – Walls are next

Join the brick-laying ceremony on 3rd March as construction of the Peldon and Wigboroughs Community Centre gets underway

With the frame of the new Peldon and Wigboroughs Community Centre now erected, and the roof going on soon, it will shortly be time to start building the walls. So we are holding a brick-laying ceremony on the site at 2.00pm on Friday March 3rd to mark the start of the construction – everyone is welcome to join us! The Future of Essex Police, Fire & Rescue?

The people of Essex are being urged to have their say in the potential change in the way Essex Police and Essex County Fire & Rescue Service is governed. To have your say respond to the consultation that ends on Wednesday 10th May.

The Policing and Crime Act 2017 enables police and crime commissioners to become the fire and rescue authority where a strong local case is made. The Government has also created a statutory duty to collaborate.

Draft minutes of the meeting of Winstred Hundred Parish Council held at Abbotts Hall Farm, Great Wigborough at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14th February 2017.

Present: John Walker, Bob Holmes, Liz Davidson, Phil Gladwin, Lynne Simmons, Netty Knill-Jones, Robert Kean, Andrew Ellis, Kevin Bentley, Zone Warden and one member of the public.

Apologies for absence: Nicky Ellis, Jinny Gale, Robert Davidson.

Minutes of the last meeting were agreed by all and signed by the chairman.

Zone Warden: A speed gun check carried out in Peldon revealed several speeding. There has been a substantial increase in fly tipping recently and prosecutions will be carried out whenever possible. Black refuse bags now have to be bought by residents. Details of refuse collections etc. are on the CBC website. There is a litter picker operating in Salcott. See Village Hall Progress this Saturday

The Peldon Village Hall Management Committee invite all to a coffee morning this Saturday 11th February. Taking place at St Mary’s Church between 10am – 12 noon cakes and refreshments will be on offer. Builders have made progress on the hall with the foundation and floor now complete. The site visit will allow you to walk through the site with the rooms marked out so you can get an idea of the layout.

No charge will be made although any donations would be welcome, since although the build is fully funded, money is still needed for fitting out of the hall.

PAWS January – Life in Spain as a Journalist

On 10th January PAWS met in their temporary home at St, Mary’s Church in Peldon. 33 members turned out to hear Ian Frewer talk about his “Life in Spain as a Journalist”. Ian started his talk with a brief History of Spain itself covering such facts as:

1936 saw the last legal burning of a witch in Spain,
the expulsion of 150,00 Jews in 1492, and
the various invasions over the centuries.

From the mid 80’s he had a holiday home in Spain and in the early 90’s he moved out there permanently. He worked on the Costa Blanca News covering such stories as

Tigers in Torrevieja,
the bombing of MacDonalds by ETA, and
Working Girls to name but a few.

He then joined a local radio with a friend on a live show covering music, local news and interviewing local celebrities. He moved back to the UK about 9 years ago. Ian was a very interesting speaker and we all enjoyed the talk and the refreshments afterwards.

Next Meeting

PAWS next get together is on the 28th February when the speaker will be Alan Bourne. Alan will talk about “The History of Perry Garden Centre”. Membership is currently full but visitors are very welcome at a cost of £5.00 which includes refreshments.

Zone Warden Report: The fly tipped asbestos has been removed. Prosecutions for fly tipping are ongoing. The Who Will Care? Awards Return for 2017

Nominations are now open for the prestigious Who Will Care? Awards taking place on 24 May 2017. Seven award categories celebrate the unsung heroes volunteering across Essex. They bring together communities and individuals who are working to make Essex an even greater place to live, work and visit.

Nominate any business, charity or individual you feel deserves recognition for their volunteering efforts in our county, by filling in an online form.

Seven Categories

The Business Award
For commercial organisations who have made an impact in their community.
The Voluntary Community Service Award
Reflecting innovation or outstanding service delivery by a third sector organisation.
Individual Volunteer Award (Young Person)
For volunteers aged under 18 who have demonstrated outstanding commitment within their community. This may be something they have done independently or in connection with a charity/community group or employer.
Individual Volunteer Award (Adult)
For volunteers aged 18+ who have demonstrated outstanding commitment within their community. This may be something they have done independently or in connection with a charity/community group or employer.
Individual Volunteer Award
For volunteers who have overcome adversity to contribute to a group or community despite the challenges they have faced.
Volunteer Team Award
A group of two or more volunteers of any age who have made an outstanding contribution to their community either independently or with a charity, community group or their employer.
Innovation Award
For social enterprises, commercial organisations and individuals who have demonstrated innovation to support the community.
